Energy Homes - Solar

If I had all ten resources at my hand to build a home that I would live in for the rest of my life I would choose a solar house. I would choose a solar home for multiple reasons, the first one being it doesn't pollute the environment very much. Another reason is that the structure is safer and stronger, from it being solid wood. Also, most solid wood homes last longer than regular homes so you can pass it down from generation to generation with a low long time cost. Also, there isn't a fear of a blackout during a snowstorm because the suns rays are always there, even if they aren't visible. Another reason is that there is a low operating fee, because if you do use another resource point you won't need it very much. The heat is another high point because it is all fresh, not going through a generator or something. Also, the air is cooler though it may not seem like it, it keeps the moisture in instead of sucking it out. Also if you build a solar home in West Virginia you get a $2,000 credit on your taxes, which is pretty cool. There are some disadvantages fo a solar home, one being the coast of building and keeping the solar panels up. Another one being if we get hail it can damage the panels really badly. With those disadvantages who wouldn't want a solar home?

I think West Virginia shouldn't allow mountain top removal for coal mining. Our forest's are slowly fading away, and with mountain top they are going to go a lot faster. Also, they sometimes use explosives and they might endanger peoples lives. They are have to create valley fills, which have forever buried over 1,2oo streams which are, very important for life. Most of the time miners just leave the land stripped instead of reclaiming the are, which if it isn't replaced soon, is never able for use again. Valley fills aren't the only pollution that mountain top removal has, also their is the liquid waste which is a lot of chemicals which are used to clean the coal, and then but back. It often kills the fish and wildlife around the area. This all relates to my life because, since I plan to stay in West Virginia when I grow up, it could diminish the environment in which I live and it could hurt my family. Also, it could destroy the aquaculture for my family, because we have a stream going through our land which my dogs play in most of the time and it could poison them.

Genetics/Heredity Blog

We inherit every single thing from our parents. They are called genes. I have inherited things from both my mom and my dad. For example, my mom has really curly hair, my dad has straight hair, and I have straight hair so I inherited it from my dad. Sometimes though they can both have a gene and I have it like none of us have a widow's peak, so therefore I inherited it from both of my parents. We all have free ear lobes, hair on our fingers, smooth chins, and no smile dimples. For our experiment,though I didn't have any, some people might have a trait neither parent has so it is most likely a recessive gene. The dominant genes my mom has are the free ear lobes, the hair on her fingers, and the curly hair, where my dad only has free ear lobes and hair on his fingers. They mostly have recessive genes, which my mom has no widows peak, a smooth chin, and no smile dimples, and my dad has no widow's peak, straight hair, a smooth chin, and no smile dimples. It is really cool when you really get down to it, at least to me anyway.

My First Blog

The thing that we have done in class that I have most enjoyed is actually what we just did with the gene project. I thought the monster pet project thing was really cool. I really got into naming and coloring the Monsters and all that. I already knew about Punnett squares from last year but I didn't really connect why they were so important so I thought it was a great idea. I've learned a lot of things so far this year but this was the best.
